Wellness Starts with the Mind

Wellness starts with the mind. As with anything that we choose to accomplish, a seed of thought has to be planted. It’s the seed that motivates us. It’s the seed of thought that drives the determination to reach any desired goal. In order for any seed to blossom it needs to be nurtured and cared for, for its continued growth and development. In this case: we are looking at a seed of thought as a personal starting point.

It is no coincidence that the terms “mind,” “body” and “soul” are used so frequently when speaking about overall health and wellness. I’m sure we have all read our share of positive thinking, law of attraction, and other self help books. The common theme is how we choose to feed our minds. Similar to the conscious decision of feeding our stomachs with food, consider thoughts as the same nourishment that fuels our minds to motivate our actions. So remember it is definitely a choice.

Take a moment to reflect on daily thoughts, conversations and even dreams, and how they motivate our day-to-day actions. It’s important to feed our bodies with positive healthy foods, just as it’s important to feed our minds in the same light.

Healthy Thought Exercises:

  • Give yourself credit. Feeling frustrated or upset? Are you concentrating on the bad things or the mistakes you’ve made, and not giving yourself credit for what you do right? Allow yourself to feel confident about the things you have accomplished, even if you’ve messed up in other areas.

  • Use words that evoke strength and success. Try filling your thoughts with words that make you feel strong, happy and in control of your life. Make a concentrated effort to focus on these words rather than those that make you feel like you are failing or incompetent.

  • Concentrate on breathing. When overwhelmed, try concentrating on simply breathing. It will relax you, eliminate some of your anxiety and allow you to focus on more positive elements in your life.
